PSAs (Public Service Announcements)

Back in the days of my youth there was this commercial, it showed an egg in a frying pan. A narrator stated "This is your brain (egg in pain), this is your brain on drugs (egg frying)." This was the first PSA I remember. Since then anti-drug PSAs have changed, and there are several new ones advocating reading, not smoking etc.

Well today there was one advocating fitness… Here's a link (Ad Council) it requires RealPlayer. The scene opens with a guy bringing some flesh toned rubber material to a lobby desk. He says he found it by the stairs and wants to know what it is. The clerk says they're love handles and that lots of people lose them by taking the stairs. You really just have to watch the commercial. I guess we have now become so lazy that we need an advertising campaign to combat our lazyness.

I'm getting a…

New road bicycle. After some careful consideration and throwing my saving plans to the wind for another couple of weeks, I have decided to purchase a shiny new road bike. Although I would normally have waited to make this purchase, I came across a deal I couldn't really pass up.

So. That means I'm going home again this weekend to pick up the bike and I'll probably bring my mountain bike and try to get in a ride up north. There are some trails that weren't open when I left for college that should be worth a spin.

This past saturday was my brother's eighteenth birthday. So now he's a legal adult, whatever that means. I think he's going to miss the regularly scheduled breaks at work, I know I did. Somedays I would be looking forward to a break but get busy and have to work straight through.

While I was home for my brother's birthday I took some time to ride Quiet Waters park with my dad. I was impressed by my ability to ride pretty much everything, but I found out how out of shape I am. I need to ride a lot more during the week. The park trail maintainers have changed up some parts of the trail since I last rode it over 4 years ago. I like the way the re-worked the end. The trail use to go to the top of a small hill then decend down to a log you had to clear at the bottom. Apparently, the sand at the bottom got too soft so they built up a banked corner. I think it's much more fun now because you fly down the hill and around the corner.

After our bike ride we went to a couple of bike shops to look at some road bikes. We saw my dad's friend Vince and he told me what size bikes I should be looking at to prevent me from being sold some bike the shop wanted to clear out of their inventory. After a little catching up there, we were off to a bike shop a little closer to home to see if there were any bargins. Sure enough, they had a 853 steel frame bike 2003 model on clearance. My dad and I both thought it was a good deal, but since I hadn't take my wallet with me on the bike ride, I couldn't get the bike, so I will be going back home this weekend to pay for it and pick it up. (Now this entry had gone in a circle.)

Random Stuff

Well, another week has gone by. So here's some randomness to entertain you.

I went camping again on Friday/Saturday it only cost $5 for the site. That was a pretty good deal.

Saturday was cool. We had a gathering, if you will, at our apartment. We played the most randomly funny game of Crainium ever.

I got a little bored on Sunday night so I did some of those online quizzes. I found out that if I were a shoe, I'd be a pair of soccer cleats and that my inner child is 10 years old.

Camping Trip Recap

This weekend was my camping adventure.

First, I went camping by myself, when I tell people that they are suprised. I don't really know why, it's not like I randomly went out to the wilderness and setup my tent. The plan was to be at Paynes Prarie before dusk in hopes of getting a campsite. What really happened was that I left later than I planned, hit bad traffic on the interstate and wrote down directions comming from the wrong direction. All of that combined put me at the park just after dark and the ranger wouldn't let me setup camp. So, I drove around a bit hoping to stumble upon some other camping area and come up with a new plan for what I would do in the event of driving around fruitlessly.

Finally, I decided to backtrack and camp at a private "camp ground" that I had been to before. This camp ground was more of an RV Resort but with trees and was right next to the highway. I figured it wouldn't be too bad and beats driving all the way home. So I set up my tent, started a fire, changed tires on my bike and roasted some marshmellows. Then I attempted to sleep. I had forgotten how loud the highway was, until I tried to sleep. My attempts to sleep were further complicated by my forgetting to bring my pillow. Needless to say, what little sleep I did get wasn't very restful.

Now that saturday had arrived, I drove back up to gainesville to meet up with my friend to go mountain biking. We met up and went to San Falasco (SP? I have no clue) and rode some of the easier trials to warm up and allow his other friend get accustomed to her new bike. Once we had finished up there it was time for lunch and then on to Hailes Trails so he could pre-ride for the race. I went along for the fun of it. Hailes trials are only open on race weekends, so it was a once in a blue moon oppurtunity. I really enjoyed riding Hailes Trails but determined that I'm way out of shape, especially if I were to try and race the course.

So my camping/biking weekend was an overall success and I will have to do something like it again soon, before the weather becomes too hot for camping.

Wally World and other things

Well, I've been avoiding Wal-Mart like the plague and today I was reminded of why I generally avoid the monstroscity. I was looking for some camping supplies for this weekend, and since I decided to go shopping so late, Wal-Mart was the only choice. I don't understand why so many people want to shop there. The store constanly has boxes on the floor making it difficult to navigate, and nothing is ever where I expect it to be. It really just seems like more of a hassle to me. I'd rather buy my groceries at Publix and go to Target for general items. Wal-Mart is my last resort.

I'm getting excited about this weekend. I'm going camping at Paynes Prarie near Gainesville. It should be a pretty fun trip. I have now added a lantern and a canvas chair to my camping gear :) Hopefully I will take lots of pictures to show when I get back.

In other news I have decided to coach T-Ball this spring. I'm looking forward to meeting my team. I like the way our church has setup the league. It's very laid back, the teams only practice once a week and all the games are on Saturday. Because the church is running the league we can pray during practice and hold a little Bible study. I like the idea behind this setup, we'll see how much I like in May :) That's when the season will be over.

That's all folks!
